5 Ways to Immerse Your Child in Art
Immersing your child in visual art can be a joyful and enriching experience that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression. And let’s be honest, it’s another way to keep your kids busy doing something hands-on and screen-free!
Here are our simple and fun — and Peekadoodle-approved — ways to make the easiest child-centered art a part of your family’s everyday life in the coming months:
Your Sidewalk, Your Child’s Canvas
- Keep it simple: a paintbrush, any container + water (watch how the art evaporates)
- Sidewalk chalk dipped in water to make bold colors
- Big body sidewalk chalk drawings
Water Play for the Win
- Toy car wash: water + enough dish soap to foam + a sponge in a large plastic container or pot (works with any plastic toy)
- Color factory: transparent plastic cups or containers full of water + food coloring in primary colors — encourage child to pour and mix
Family Art Gallery
- Dedicate a space in your home — even a portion of a wall — and encourage your children to hang their work up at their eye level, in a way that makes sense for them as “curators”
- Once the artworks are hung, ask your child to take you on a “gallery tour”
- Extra credit: Make a large collaborative drawing — think poster board size — that the entire family creates together
Kitchen Creations
- Salt dough
- Ooblek
- Baking soda and vinegar
Groovy Beach Art
- Mandala
- Beach rock painting
- Spell your name with found beach objects
